Growth of the City
Settled in 1800s due to location @ convergence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers
Important in Westward expansion, last place to supply before heading West
Despite border wars of Bleeding Kansas City grew throughout 1850s
Crossroads of the Country with railway bridge over the Missouri River à population x 4 in 50 years
Became 2nd busiest stockyards (after Chicago) and remains so à transfer site for western pastured beef on its way to slaughter in Chicago
Pendergast era 1890-1940 = jazz boom, barbecue, industry, transportation
Post-WWII Dynamics
Decline of rail travel post WWII = city less important
More single-family homes needed
Expansion into surrounding area à decline of urban neighborhoods
Race riots in 1967 à white flight à decline in population til 1990s
After 1990s growth outward
